Noodles with Gruyere Cheese

3/4 pound medium or fine egg noodles
2 tablespoons butter
Freshly ground pepper to taste
1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 pound grated Gruyere cheese, about 1 1/4 cups loosely packed


1. Preheat the broiler.
2. Cook the noodles in boiling salted water until tender. Drain. Return noodles to the kettle and add half the butter, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Toss to blend.
3. Spoon the noodles into a hot serving dish. Heat the cream and pour it over the noodles.
4. Sprinkle the cheese over the noodles and dot with the remaining butter. Run under the broiler until the cheese melts.
